Context

A prominent global industrial gases and gas equipment manufacturer oversees multiple European facilities, including one situated in Belgium. In collaboration with a Zamac alloys producer, the company undertook the design and construction of a combustion control cabinet aimed at enhancing furnace performance.

Measurement Specifications

The furnace operates on natural gas, where precise control of natural gas supply and oxygen flow rates is critical for optimizing combustion efficiency and product quality. To meet these demands, the industrial gas equipment provider sought to equip the cabinet with flowmeters capable of accurately monitoring gas flow rates across a wide measurement range. However, the challenge lay in the limited installation space. Notably, natural gas flow measurement presented a unique hurdle due to the low operating pressure (0.3…0.45 barg / 4.35…6.5 psig) and fluctuating gas conditions, necessitating temperature and pressure-compensated flow measurement.

Given the constrained mounting space, the installation of multiple sensors was deemed impractical. This scenario prompted the need for a compact flow instrumentation solution that integrates temperature and pressure measurement, along with gas volume correction. Additionally, the low-pressure conditions ruled out the use of mechanical or other flowmeters that induce pressure loss by design. All these requirements were explicitly outlined in a formal request for quote (RFQ) process.
